About the French Republican Calendar
The French Republican Calendar (Calendrier républicain français) replaced the Gregorian calendar on 24 October 1793 (4 Brumaire An II), renaming every month after nature — Vendémiaire (vintage), Brumaire (mist), Thermidor (heat) — and every day after plants, animals, and tools, erasing saints from public time entirely. Alongside it came revolutionary decimal time, dividing the day into 10 hours of 100 minutes each, sweeping away the old church-clock order in a single decree. Used officially from Year I (1792) until Napoleon abolished it on 1 January 1806 (11 Nivôse An XIV), the calendar remains history's most radical attempt to subordinate time itself to revolutionary rationalism.
